6. Hiroko Shiina

I find these images quite cruel in some way. They are full of wounds, full of despair and silent cry. It's a cry for redemption, for hope, for peace. But the relief can't come. The laws of Hiroko's worlds are undisputed. You can find beauty in despair only.

Oh, you'll find me, between

The devil and the deep blue sea
And I'm going under

Dot, dot, dot... Beautiful world of dots and spots and twisting lines. Nature, cityscapes, wild animals, people who look like they live in dreams or circus tricks. People of old, forgotten tales. Vintage reminiscences, black and white images or too bright, intense colors. Anxiety and prayers. Folk motifs and starry nights.

4. Whoolie Chen

May is a cold month this year. But still, nature doesn't hesitate to bloom as fully as she can.
Illustrations of Whooli Chen reminds me of may gardens, fresh colors, different flowers trying to catch attention of the sun, wind and human's eye.

Whooli Chen is an illustrator based in Taiwan. She has a MA degree in illustration field from University of the Arts London. She misses an urban fox in London that she spent a summer with. She loves literature and art, whether together or apart // behance

And indeed she creates pictures full of books and plants, cozy little places, perfect for introverts with magic in their hearts. There are zen gardens and Eastern symbols, as well as inspiration from botanical prints and children's worlds and literature classics.

Theme: Benzaiten

Today I come to you not with an artist, but with a theme, with mythological character from Japanese and Hindu traditions.

"Benzaiten is the goddess of everything that flows: water, words, speech, eloquence, music and knowledge. She became one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. She is also a goddess of beauty, mothers wishing attractive daughters fasted and prayed for seven days at the temple of Benzaiten.
She is depicted as a beautiful woman with eight arms with two hands depicted in prayer and others holding; sword, bow and arrow, wheel, key, axe, spear, mandolin or biwa. She is also depicted as riding a golden dragon. She carries a jewel that can grant wishes. She is the ruler of love, music, arts, inspiration, talent, wealth and romance. As a sea and water goddess she is a purifying force that protects people from the darkness of the material world. She is also a protector from earthquakes. Her festival is at the summer solstice and many of her shrines (benten-do or benten-sha) are still standing. She is sometimes called daughter of the dragon king and originally of Hindu origin (Goddess Saraswati). Her husband was a wicked dragon who she transformed."
